home about archives promotion of our businesses and my opinions skiing march 5 as you know, i am addicted to skiing, even though my poor knees might not be so keen! having been in australia for 2 years we only got one proper ski trip in, which was our week in new zealand. so, when we came back i thought i deserved two ski holidays this winter, to try and catch up a bit … that was my logic anyway. we looked at a week, in consultation with both daughters, to go somewhere new, our preference at the time was probably the dolomites in italy. however, that didn’t seem to be working too well, and with one daughter in dubai and one in france, we settled on zell am see in austria. we booked it all individually, because at the start we only had our flights from the uk to sort, and the transfers and accommodation. one daughter was sorting her flights from dubai (to venice and then on to salzburg), and the other was, we assumed at the time, going to drive from france. things rarely go to plan do they? dubai daughter sorted herself out. france daughter ended up in the uk, doing some decorating for us in two of our hmo houses and so she was in the uk, not france, and needed to fly with us. thank goodness that ryan air had availability on the same flight – it was actually cheaper when i booked it 4 or 5 weeks later for them. we decided on rail transfers from salzburg to zell, on the basis that saturdays are of course the busiest change-over days and the roads can be busy, thus meaning a longer time spent in the bus. actually, when we looked at the trains it was a no-brainer – we paid 36 euros for 5 of us for a nearly 2 hour train journey! it was easy, bit delayed in arriving in salzburg, but we arrived in zell in good time, had a 5 minute walk to the apartment and all was great. the apartment was at appartementhotel post , which is right in the centre of zell (over the post office would you believe), just over the road from the main pedestrian area with bars, restaurants and shops, and about 3 minutes from the main ski lift perfect! the apartment was lovely, big, 3 bedrooms, nicely furnished – one daughter said “for a change it actually looks like it did in the pictures”, which was very true. there were a couple of downsides to the apartment, there was no oven, just the oldest microwave anybody has ever seen and the hob; additionally, there was only one bathroom and one separate wc and although we knew that when we booked, in hindsight it would have been better with two baths. france daughter was pretty put out about the oven – she is a chef and had been allocated the job of feeding us all week! snow had been reported as good, but there wasn’t a lot in the town when we arrived. we get off and sort hiring of equipment – the two frenchies have no boards/boots – the rest of us have our skis/boards with us. the reception at the apartment recommended a couple of places to go for equipment hire and off we went. the guys in the shop were lovely, very friendly, very helpful; the equipment was very good and the prices were very reasonable. so far all good. visit to the supermarket to stock up on all necessities, such as food, wine, schnapps! next morning, we are away and at the lifts, bit of a queue for passes, but not too bad, no real queues for the lifts. the guys in the hire shop had recommended us which piste to start with and to get the ski legs working, and off we went. we skied 2 days in the resort, had a day off, 3rd day at the kitzsteinhorn glacier which was fabulous, about half an hour on the bus, from practically outside the apartment. no queues, no problems, fantastic day, fantastic views, lovely restaurant at 3,000 metres for lunch – fab, fab day. next 2 days in the resort – we nearly went back to the glacier, but the weather was a bit on and off, only from the point of view of snowing – which can’t be a bad thing when you are on a ski holiday! but i am pretty fussy about visibility so we enjoyed the pistes at zell am see. during the week we visited a couple of bars (as you do!) and crazy daisy was certainly one of the favourites, with the crazy game of hammering nails into huge logs, with the narrow end of a hammer! i am certain that it gets even more crazy the later it gets, and the more beer that has been consumed! on our last night we went out for a lovely dinner – gave the chef a night off! – at feinschmeck hotel & restaurant – it was lovely food, great service, and a very reasonable price. in fact we found austria generally pretty sensible on price, and didn’t feel as if we were being ripped off because we were in the holiday resort. and, to catch up on my missed skiing, we have 6 nights booked in soldeu in andorra in just over a week’s time – can’t wait – but this time it’s just the two of us. posted under holidays | no comments » long time – no blog march 5 dentists – don’t you just love em (er, no, not really!). sometime around christmas i started to get a few aches in my jaw – didn’t really feel like toothache as such, but it was quite painful at times. didn’t appear to be directly related to eating on that side of my mouth either, so i just ignored it for a while – as you do rather than go to the dentist! anyway, it got bad enough that i thought i better go and have it checked out – was considering it might be an abscess by now – but hoping it wasn’t. so, we get to the dentist, she can see nothing obvious, so off we go to have an x-ray – i was expecting to bite on a couple of bits of card, but no, i stand in front of a machine which whizzes around my head and has apparently done an x-ray of my whole jaw. this shows no infections, but she is concerned about a tooth on the top left – the pain is in the bottom left – where there is root canal work (which she asks me about and which i cannot remember – only vaguely that i had it done in poole!). so, a more specific x-ray is needed – and this time out comes the ever-faithful bit of card to bite on! however, this doesn’t really show much either, so then she thinks she has found a hairline crack in the back tooth, bottom left. the way to diagnose this is to put a brace of sorts on the tooth, holding it together and seeing if the pain goes away. this is done, after the old filling is removed, no additional decay is found, and a temporary filling put back in. this brace is a metal hoop around the tooth holding it together – great thinks i – until i can’t bit on it, can’t put my teeth together to bite or chew on the other side of my mouth either, and this bit of metal is shredding my tongue. two weeks later, back at the dentist to see if the pain has gone – after about 10 days it was improved, but still there. however, it is decided that it is definitely a crack and the answer is to have a permanent cover put on, which goes across all four corners and supplies the filling, and is then cemented in place. at this visit i ask her if she can do something about the brace, since i can’t really eat properly and it shredded my tongue – which has just about recovered now. so she files some bits off for me and makes it slightly easier to put my teeth together to try and eat! but when i get home, what does it do, yes, it shreds my tongue again – however the next appointment is only a week away so we will survive! also, at this appointment i have to have my initial check-up, because they haven’t done this so far because they have been too busy diagnosing the pains! next visit (yes, this is the 4th now!!) is to have the mould taken so that they can created this cover in the lab. i’m thinking, quick in and out, casts of my teeth taken, on your way. oh no, i have to have an injection, in fact ended up with two, the brace removed, the temporary filling removed, the casts taken – via several lots of gunky stuff in my mouth – the brace stays off (so i am hoping the pain is not coming back because it takes the lab 3 weeks to make the cover), the tooth gets a bit of re-shaping so that the cover will fit and work, and anothe
